Playing catch up

I hate it when my computer is on the fritz!  It totally messes me up!  I had this whole thing planned to add to my blog, the my computer kicked up a fuss and I had to post it as is from my phone last night.  Sans pics, sans food log.  I felt like I was playing hookie!

Yesterday I had a lunch meeting with a drug rep and she brought lunch.  Chicken panini and bean salad.  I had half of each, not too bad.  She also brought dessert!

Can you believe I turned this down???  Thankfully she ignored it too and we didn't eat it at lunch, she left it for me to "share".  So I walked it down to the kitchen, brought attention to it and promptly left to go for a walk for the rest of my lunch hour!

I'm lucky there's a nice walking park right down the road from my office!

Today I'm totally on my game!  I ate really well, did a good grocery shop to stock up on healthy food, made a yummy, low point dinner Cashew chicken lettuce wraps and a healthy bedtime snack of green grapes and pudding (It's a milk serving remember?).

When I got home from grocery shopping, my birthday present was here!

I'd gotten a visa gift card and decided to introduce myself to David's Tea! Gourmet loose leaf tea.  Tom called it "yuppy tea" lol!

There's so many interesting yummy sounding flavours I don't even know where to start!

Here are my food logs for yesterday and today.  Yesterday's is first.

Pushing pushing pushing

Maybe it's the mild weather, making me think spring is right around the corner, or Physio saying I should be back to running shortly, or the fact that I'm back on the downward spiral of weight loss (yeah!).  But I'm thinking about the finish line again!  I really want to hit goal by the summer.  I DO NOT want to buy another summer wardrobe that'll only go to good will in the fall!  I won't do it!

So I'm on my game.  I'm going to try and get out walking on nice days, hopefully to make the exercise a habit that I can continue when I'm allowed to run again.

Tomorrow is payday and I'm taking off work early to do grocery shopping and stock us up on healthy food. I'm continuing to menu plan, keeps the chaos at bay I think!

I really want this.  I know it's in my power to do this.  The half-assing has to end!

There are 21 weigh in's before July 1st.  That's about 1.2 pounds a week.  A challenge at this point, but it's possible.  I can do it.

I'm going to start measuring my lean body mass and fat mass as well.  Hopefully I'll see more changes that way and will stay centred.

Well, my laptop decided to die on me before I could get this blog finished!  So I'll end it here because  I really can't do this from my phone!!!

I had lunch today with a drug rep, I'll talk about that tomorrow!

Two for two!

I'm down a pound this week!  two pounds in two weeks!  I'm ecstatic!  That makes a total loss of 82.2 pounds.  Only 25.2 pounds to go!

Well that's as far as I got in my post before Tom came in and told me he's lost his wedding ring while taking out the garbage :(  He feels horrible!  We've searched the garbage but I couldn't in good conscience leave it at the curb, so we've moved it back up to the house.  In all likelihood it's in the snow.  Thankfully it's supposed to be very mild tomorrow and the snow will melt.  Hopefully it won't get washed away.

I know it's not the end of the world and it's a simple token, our marriage doesn't need that ring to be strong, but it hurts just the same.

Anyways, I don't feel much like writing.  Night all.

Well timed words

Whenever you find yourself doubting how far you can go
Just remember how far you have come
Remember everything you have faced, all the battles you have won and all the fears you have overcome.
You Can Do It.

This was the first post I read this morning on Weight Watchers 100+ pounds to lose message board.  Profound!  And seriously what I needed to hear precisely at that moment!  Not that I've been struggling, but the closer I get to goal, the harder it gets and the farther away it seems.  I need to remember the person I was, how little stamina I had, how much of my kids childhood I was watching from the sidelines, how many years I was taking off my life.  I need to remember that I've lost 81.2 pounds.  Over 80 pounds!!!  That's a hell of a lot of weight!  I need to remember that what I can do now, I couldn't do then, I've come a long way.  A really long way!

I'm doing this.  I have done this.  I'm already successful, these last 26.2 pounds are gravy.  I just need to let them happen.  I need to keep plugging away, it'll come.  This is my life now.  And I like it!  I want it this way!  I'm not starving, dieting, avoiding, sacrificing and I'm doing it.

I got this.

Meal planning and hubby progress!

Well hubby and I had some time to discuss the weeks menu!  I'm excited, lol!

Tonight we had roast beef with potatoes and mixed veggies.  Hubby had a hankering so he went and got a roast and it slow cooked all afternoon.  So good!

Here's this weeks menu!  I'm getting better with taking picture of my meals, so I'll do my best to put them up on my food blog.  I'm really neglecting that!

Monday - Tortilla pizza
Tuesday - Chicken stroganoff over baby potatoes
Wednesday - Quiche
Thursday - Cashew chicken lettuce wraps
Friday - Italian wedding soup

Tom is doing really well on Weight Watchers!  He's religiously tracking, has been working out to get activity points and is doing better using his points throughout the day.  His big issue is not eating much in the first half of the day.  He's getting better with that!  He said to me while we were out that he saw 218 today and it makes him really want to keep going!  He's lost 7 pounds in the past 2 weeks!  I think eating healthy has really affected him physically too!  Either that or I suddenly look really hot and irresistible! ;) Lets just say it's been a good week!

I did ok eating today, could have been better, Lara wanted pancakes for breakfast, so I made those closer to lunch, then split a chocolate bar with Tom while we were running errands, Dinner was good, Roast beef and veggies, then I finished up the day with about an ounce of fudge (Tom asked me to make some of my Turtles fudge for a schoolmate of his) I needed to sample then an orange just now.  I'm still having a hard time kicking the sweets and I know I really need to give myself a few days of hard nosing it, then I'll reward myself with another case of pudding :)

Saturday dreaming

Not too much to write about today, we spent the day out.  We promised Tom's Grandma that we'd take her out to get Lara's birthday present, a mattress for her new twin bed.  So we took her to Ikea (they're mattresses are rolled up >> can fit in our car!).  We had greasy spoon breakfast, I avoided the hashbrowns this time and had 2 poached eggs, a slice of ham and a slice of bacon.  Not too bad this time!  Nothing like on my birthday!  We went to Cora's for lunch today and Tom and I split a tuna melt sandwich and lots of fruit and each had a half a cup of cottage cheese.  It was perfect to share!

We did some house dreaming, driving around looking at nice neighbourhoods and houses that are for sale, we're not in the market yet, but everyday Tom gets closer to finishing school and we feel so much closer to being able to own our own home!  We really can't wait!

Dinner was less than stellar, but paired with an orange, a burger at home wasn't too too bad.

Renewed Fervor!

I woke up stupidly early again this morning!  6am!  I didn't have to work until 9!  I really don't get why my body doesn't like to sleep in!  I fall asleep easily and sleep fitfully, but I can no loger sleep until 8, let alone noon! Oh well, I think I'm going to use that time in the mornings to run, once I have permission to again.

I feel really on my game today (I did have a donut mind you...)!  I haven't really had that feeling in the past few weeks.  I've just been treading water I think.  One of the huge reasons I'm feeling so on it today, I logged into the weight watchers Canana message boards this morning, as I do every morning, and I see this!

I opened it up and 33 posters had posted congrats on receiving my 75 pound medal!

Congratulations Eva on reaching and surpassing your 75 lb. milestone at your meetings.

I cried when I saw it!   This was my response.

I'm blubbering like a baby! I honestly didn't expect the shout out for getting my 75 pound medal as I've already met the 75 pounds lost a couple of months ago! After staying the same weight for 6 weigh in's, I was getting a little down and with receiving the medal at meeting this week, I have a renewed sense of accomplishment and hope that I can keep going! Thank you so much for recognizing that!!!

All of your kind words have warmed my heart, put tears in my eyes and will put a bounce in my step all day! THIS is why I'm here! You are all amazing!

THANK YOU!

I had a great lunch today!  I had leftover spaghetti sauce that I'd made this week, I didn't really want to spend the points on a whole lot of pasta, so I steamed some cauliflower and made a small serving of noodles and served it all up with spaghetti sauce.  It was really good!  There is a ton of veggies in my spaghetti sauce, but I still feel like it's indulgent, so putting it over cauliflower gave me the soul food feeling without the guilt!

I'd already eaten a lot of it by the time I took the pic, there was about 2 cups of cauliflower and half a serving of penne.  It was very filling!  I didn't finish it all!

I splurged on a donut this afternoon (damn generous patients who bring in treats!) and I had 3 toffifee's.   I really can't go long without a treat!  Geez!

Lara's Birthday! Part two!

We had a great day today!

I woke up at six when Tom's alarm went off.  I didn't have to get up a I took the day off to spend with Lara, but I usually can't fall back asleep, so I got up to have a coffee with him before he had to leave for school.  I wrapped Lara's present and had breakfast while I watched an episode of Grey's Anatomy on Netflix.

Lara woke at about 8:30 and I asked her what she wanted for breakfast and she said "Ice cream" :)  So that's what she had!

She just couldn't wait to open her present!

My mom and I took her to pick out new bedding for her new bedroom (another present she doesn't know about, we're going to paint her bedroom and put up a 4 poster bed!).  We hit Pizza Pizza on the way home for her "free birthday slice".

I was good and had half of a chicken bruschetta whole wheat thin crust pizza.  It was pretty good!  I still prefer my own tortilla pizza ( I can have the whole thing for the same points as half of this one!

After lunch we went home for a few, I had a snack of yellow pepper and dip, then we dropped Zaryah off with my nephew Jordan and Lara and I went to go pick up Daddo! We stopped at Tim Horton's first and got Lara some Timbits and me a coffee.  She shared two timbits with Mama :)

We took her to the movies for the first time!  Monster's Inc 3D was still playing so we caught a matinee.  Had dinner first, I had a hot dog, she had more pizza and Daddo had a burger.  We got popcorn and M$M's peanuts (of course) and Lara got her own little popcorn, pop and Kinder Egg!  Daddo also got her a huge bag of cotton candy! (Pushover!)

We weren't sure what she was going to think about the movie theater.  Dark, loud, could have been scary.  I'm pretty proud of her though, when it got loud she simply put her fingers in her ears!

She really loved the 3D glasses!  They were Monster's Inc collectible ones so she got to keep them!

She wore them the whole way home!

We picked up a birthday cake on our way to pick up Zaryah and stopped at my sister's long enough to sing happy birthday and share cake around!

All in all it was a great day!  I ate well for the first half of the day, lots of junk at the movies and after, but that's a part of life and part of birthday celebrating!

Lara's birthday! Part one!

I figured that since it's her birthday and all, I'd post her birth story!   I'll tell you all about our day later!

The delivery part is pretty detailed.  Please don't read it if you're squeamish!  I pointed it out so you can skip it if you want.  I'm still dealing with lasting issues from this fall, so it's always in my head.  Thank God I got a beautiful, healthy, happy little girl out of it!

This was taken the night before I fell down the stairs.

So it all started Thursday morning (Jan 22nd 2009.  37 weeks pregnant) when I fell and did the splits down the stairs. I couldn't walk and had a blinding pain in my pelvic/groin area. I managed to make it to my cell phone and called Tom. He came home and helped me into the car and took me to Emergency.

They weren't too eager to run any tests or do an exam even! They did a non stress test and since I said I wasn't spotting they gave me a Tylenol #3 prescription and sent me home. I went from there right to Dr Debbie's office (my O.B and family doctor) for my regular O.B visit. The baby's heartbeat was strong and she told me to call her if the pain got worse.

I was in agony all Friday and called her that night, she told me to go to Obstetrics the next day, get a pelvic X ray and she said she'd meet me there. She said the X ray wouldn't hurt the baby as they do chest X rays on newborns all the time. They wanted to make sure that my pelvis wasn't broken as they wouldn't let me deliver over a broken pelvis. She told me that they would try and keep my pain managed until they could induce me the nect Thursday when I was 38 weeks.

Tom and my brother Tommy, sister and Nieces were my Nurses at home for that 48 hours and were totally amazing! I couldn't lift my legs into or out of bed on my own, couldn't even move without crying out in agony. They had to literally lift my legs and support me when I walked to the washroom.

On Saturday morning, Tom and my brother brought me to the hospital. The wonderful nurses gave me Morphine which helped so much! They did a non stress test and sent me for the X ray, which was painful, but the Morphine helped! They put me in a regular room. At around 2pm, Dr Debbie came in and examined me. She felt my hips and around my pelvis, she told me she might have seen a small crack on my pelvis, but I should be OK to deliver. She told Tom and my brother to leave the room and started the internal to see if I had any injuries there, and she said the baby's at +3 station! Her heads right there! And you're 2-3 cm dilated and 90% effaced! And the waterbag is bulging. She turned to the Nurse and said I guess you don't want me to break her water here eh? The nurse said they were going to move me to a L&D room where the doctor could break the water. Them she left the room and I was alone, dumbfounded. I came in for pain management and ended up being in labour! Tom and my brother were no where to be found, so I texted my sister "Apparently Im in labour! Theyre going to break my water! Holy shit!" Tom came in and I told him and he got a big grin on his face. We were going to have our baby!

They moved me to a L&D room and there was a line up of women in labour, so they held off breaking my water. All I wanted was my sister Mary to be there with me. She'd had 4 kids and has always been a huge support person for me, so somehow she showed up, I was given another dose of Morphine, lol!
At around 7 pm, Dr Debbie came in and broke my water and checked me again, I was 3 cm dilated. She said that the baby being so low in my pelvis was adding to the pain I was feeling and delivering the baby would help a lot with that.

I was feeling a lot better after the Morphine and was tired of being in bed, so I got up and decided to walk if I could to get labour going. I started having "I think I'm having a contraction" shortly after 8pm and they were every 5 minutes lasting about 30-40 seconds. I went back to the L&D room and they started an IV and started up the Pitocin at 9pm, they upped it at around 10ish and I started having really strong contractions right on top of each other. The Nurse checked me somewhere around 10:30 pm and said I was still 3cm. I decided then that I wanted an epidural because if these are this strong and close together at 3 cm, I didn't think I could handle going to 10 cm. She called Dr Paul (Dr Debbie's husband, my other family doctor who moonlights as an Anaesthesiologist -- Gotta love small town hospitals!) to come and do my epidural.

If you're squeamish, stop here!  Start again below!

While I waited, I started vomiting violently while having back to back contractions, not fun. Dr paul came in at around 10:45 pm and started the epidural. He'd stop whatever he was doing while I had a contraction, then start up again. While he was inserting it, I started grunting and bearing down. Dr paul said "I know what that sound is! Maybe I should check you when I'm finished here!" Low and behold, at 11pm, I was 10 cm. He told the Nurse to call Dr Debbie. She came and I started pushing. Still in disbelief that I was in labour, let alone that I was at the pushing stage!

I pushed and pushed and brought the head down quickly, spent 40 mins on my back trying to get her head around the pelvic rim. I'd push and push, and at the end of each push my sister, Tom, or the Dr or Nurse would tell "me that's it! Just like that!". But after so many pushes, I couldn't push like that for long! I decided that on my back was counter productive and said "there's gotta be a better way to do this!" Dr Debbie told the Nurse to go and get the squat bar, which she gave Debbie a look for, apparently, only Dr Debbie asks for the bar, lol! Somehow I managed to get up on my haunches and push while using gravity. I still don't know how I did it, with every contraction I'd jump up, grab the bar and squat to push! After 3 days of not even being able to move, it was incredible!

At 11:55pm, her head came out, with a tight cord around her neck, Dr Debbie told Tom to cut it quickly, I gave one more big push, and Lara Blaise flew out! Debbie put her on my tummy and she was ghostly white, as I was thinking "she's white! What is she doing still on me!" someone grabbed her and ran her to the warmer. At this point my sister just about passed out apparently!

Dr Paul came in to deliver the placenta and stitch me up, Lara was born with her elbow up beside her head and tore me a new one!!

Ok!  That part's over!

Dr Debbie worked on her for a long time getting her to breathe, and what seemed like a thousand years, we heard her first feeble cry, after about 5 minutes.

Her first picture taken.

I didn't even ask her APGAR score, I could guess it was almost as low as it could be, save she did have a heartbeat. Debbie kept helping her as her breathing was poor, she did bloodwork, started an IV and helped her breathe for 70 mins before she felt she could hold her own, and brought her to me.

She was hooked up to everything, but was breathing on her own, and her eyes were open!

What a relief! As a pediatric Nurse, I knew what had just happened, and how bad that was, poor Tom had a hard time keeping me sane when I knew what was happening, Kudos to him! He was an awesome coach!

My sister Mary was the one taking the pictures.  It was a scary experience for her too!  She was so happy to hold and love Lara!

She was so beautiful! Way smaller than I'd expected, but the most gorgeous thing I'd ever seen! Perfect in every way!  Her official weight is 6 pounds 3 ounces, but that was after she was resuscitated and was pumped full of fluid.  Dr Debbie estimated her weight at 5 pounds 14 oz.

Debbie explained what had just happened, and how dire the situation was. She said that the bloodwork showed that her blood count was very low, and in all likelyhood I'd haemorrhaged when I fell and that's where her blood loss was from, a placental abruption.  The baby was grunty and singing, which means her breathing was still not very good, and she needed to be watched. Dr Debbie was on the fence if she was going to send her to a NICU somewhere. In the end, she decided to watch her for a bit, and she slowly improved. At 4am, Dr Debbie decided she was ok to go home, and came in to my room to tell me that the baby had settled, but needed to be watched closely by the Nurses overnight, and that she'd come back in the morning to see how Lara was doing.

At 8am, I arose from a sleepless night and got Tom to go to the Nurses station to see how Lara was doing. They brought her to me, awake and peaceful! That day she didn't have a suck reflex, and was very listless, but her breathing was good. Her blood sugar was low at birth, so she stayed on the IV for 4 days getting her bloodwork checked every 4 hours.

On Tuesday she started breastfeeding and perked up a lot! With a good latch, and obvious appetite! That day her jaundice reared its head and she ended up under the lights overnight.

On wednesday morning, her bloodwork came back good, and the IV and lights were stopped and she was allowed to stay with us!

Wednesday the doctor told us "no visitors" and we worked on getting the breastfeeding down pat, and on Thursday morning we were sent home!

After this whole event, my doctors were upset with Emerg that an Ultrasound was not done on me when I fell. Had they done one, they would have seen the placental abruption and Lara probably would have been delivered on Thursday. She was born a sick little baby, and some of that could have been prevented had an ultrasound been done.

An inquiry has been started at the Hospital regarding this whole thing, and a protocol is being put in place of what to do if a pregnant woman comes in with ANY kind of Trauma.
I have to say, our little hospital is a wonderful place with an excellent, competent staff. We don't hold any grudge against the Emerg staff and doctor that saw me there. Mistakes are made, and that doctor feels gravely ill about it. Even the best doctors make mistakes, they just only make them once. I will always be a supporter of the small town hospital, they have a big job, and sometimes face way bigger events than any big hospital, and with less resources at the ready!

The Obstetrics staff went above and beyond during my stay, I had the charge Nurse as my nurse the whole time, and I had a semiprivate room to myself for the entire 6 days, which meant Tom had his own bed! The were attentive and very supportive, explaining everything that was being done, and were all great breastfeeding coaches. I'm sure we got exemplary treatment because they were afraid we'd sue, but that doesn't matter, we appreciate everything they've done.
